About the Silver Slugs
Welcome!
Founded in 1988, the UCSC Retirees Association is open to all current and retired faculty and staff. If you are retired, congratulations! You are now able to enjoy a change of pace and other rewards of honorably retired life. One of these benefits is that you are eligible for membership in the UCSC Retirees Association (RA).
The Association has five primary objectives:
- Support a continuing affiliation with the University of California, Santa Cruz.
- Serve as a retiree advocate and monitor health insurance and other earned benefits that affect UCSC retirees.
- Promote and provide opportunities for interaction among retirees.
- Raise funds for scholarships for UCSC students through the UCSC Retirees Association Bruce Lane Memorial Scholarship for military veterans and the Silver Slug Award Scholarship for UCSC staff and their dependents.
- Serve the University as advocates, ambassadors, and volunteers.
Each year, social and informational events provide you with opportunities to get together with old friends and colleagues. And even if you move away from the Santa Cruz area, you can still stay abreast of UCSC Retiree Association news through our newsletter that is produced four times a year and by checking this website for updates and announcements.
Participation in the Council of University of California Retiree Associations (CUCRA) is an important component of your membership. CUCRA’s impressive group of officers advocate for retirees’ interests and concerns with the Office of the President. CUCRA meetings include representatives from all UC campuses and laboratory retiree groups. The group's officers take an active advocacy role on behalf of retirees and are especially vocal about health benefits and cost-of-living issues.
Our fellow retirees at UCSD have formed a partnership with Collette Vacations, which provides UC retirees with travel opportunities. More information is available on the CUCRA website. Collette's agency fee is contributed to CUCRA, which effectively keeps our CUCRA dues at a modest 50¢ per member and underwrites some of the cost of hosting CUCRA's biannual meetings.
