UCSC RETIREES ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

The UCSC Retirees Association maintains an ongoing commitment to and interest in UCSC students by raising money for the UCSC Retirees Association Bruce Lane Memorial Current Year Scholarship fund and the UCSC Retirees Association Bruce Lane Memorial Endowment Scholarship Fund.

The Board of Directors has ruled that priority for scholarships be directed to students who have served in the United States military. After May 2016 the Association will have awarded $38,000 in scholarships since May 2009 to military veteran students. Awards of $1,000, instead of $500, are now being given.

The Retirees Board named the Current Year Scholarship fund and the Endowment Scholarship fund in memory of Bruce Lane, an architect on the UCSC staff between 1964 and 1991.  Bruce volunteered for immediate induction in WWII and left for service about two weeks after high school graduation. He served in Europe as a noncommissioned officer, was a recipient of the WWII GI Bill, was a commissioned engineer officer in the Army Reserves for 35 years, and was passionate about supporting UCSC military vetran students.

You may direct your donations to either the Endowment or to the Current Year Scholarship Fund. Retirees and others may donate at any time using the form below or by adding to the scholarship collection jar at our social events.  Some members have started a tradition of contributing money earned from serving as election workers. Remember that when the military veteran students volunteered for military service they took the chance of risking their lives, being wounded, or being affected psychologically. They deserve all the help we can give them.

An Art and Craft Fair was held in November 2015 in cooperation with and at the VFW Post #5888 in Santa Cruz. $1,685 was raised for the UCSC Retirees Association Bruce Lane Memorial Current Year Scholarship Fund. It is now believed that this will be an annual affair; and because of the experience gained last year, more money is expected to be earned from subsequent fairs.
