Tour of New Santa Cruz Shakespeare Venue

On January 28, 2016, Rick Wright, President of the Santa Cruz Shakespeare Board of Directors provided a tour of the proposed new outdoor theater in DeLaveaga Park for Santa Cruz Shakespeare. Pending the Santa Cruz City Council’s approval at their February 9 meeting, plans for the development of the new sight are in place and the work is scheduled to begin immediately. A model of the planned Festival Grove Rick described to us on site can be found on the festival’s website: https://www.santacruzshakespeare.org/news/

The tour group learned that most of the initial work planned for the Grove will be excavation to remove landfill, creating an appropriate pitch for the seating and the operating space under and around a new stage. Other than an existing quonset hut that will become the ticket office, the initial facilities will be provided by rented mobile buildings. Pluses environmentally will be the removal of landfill, culling out hazardous dead and dying eucalyptus trees and planting native redwood seedlings.
